Dutch Air Guitar Championships

Jan ‘Buddy Volly’ Vollaard heeft tijdens de Nederlandse Luchtgitaar Kampioenschappen de Life Time Achievement Award 2009 ontvangen. Vollaard, in het dagelijks leven free lance popjournalist, is al 25 jaar verbonden aan dagblad NRC en tevens aan NRC Next en de Vara-gids. Schreef in de jaren tachtig een carnavalskraker, hoogste notering een 7e plaats, met ‘Joke, stop met koken’ van De Leidse Sleutelgaten. Veelzijdig als hij is, treedt hij in 2005 tijdens de finale van het NK Luchtgitaar op als Theremin-speler, waarbij hij het Wilhelmus voor de nieuwe kampioen speelt. Zet daarna alle schroom ten opzichte van het luchtgitaarspelen opzij. Dit is te zien op de foto, waar Jan Volaard precies op de Crossroads van Robert Johnson, midden in Mississippi, in strakke luchtgitaarpose staat. Is sinds 2006 zeer gewaardeerd lid van de jury van de finale van het NK Luchtgitaar in Paradiso. Vollaard leeft en werkt in Amsterdam.

Je zal maar net 22 zijn en dan al een life time achievement award krijgen. Bij het Nederlands Luchtgitaar Kampioenschap krijgt eenieder wat hij of zij verdient en dus ontving Stacey Rookhuizen tijdens de finale van het NK de 2008 Air Guitar Lifetime Achievement Award uit handen van juryvoorzitter Vergouw. ‘Stacey is enthousiast en gewaardeerd lid van de nationale jury sinds 2004, heeft vele jury’s zelf voorgezeten en organiseert i.s.m. de nationale organisatie nu zelf voorrondes door het hele land. Tevens heeft zij publicitair achter de schermen veel voor ons betekent’, aldus organisator Vergouw, ‘Zij is de toekomst van het NK Luchtgitaar. Daarin maakt leeftijd, achtergrond, kleur, gezindheid of wat dan ook niets uit.’ Stacey toonde zich ontroerd, dankbaar en verguld met de trofee.

The 2007 winner of the Dutch Air Guitar Life Time Achievement Award has been awarded to guitarplayer Phil Tilli, from the start of the championships in 2003 a member of the judging team at the finals. Tilli has played in several well known Dutch bands, amongst others in Trockener Kecks, a Dutch punkrock outfiit with a large cultfollowing. Tilli is now touring with the new Dutch Britpop sensation ‘Moke’, currently in the Dutch charts with hitsingles ‘Last Chance’ and ‘Here Comes The Summer” as well as with debutalbum ‘Shorland’. The album is, after more than one year, still in the Dutch top 50 charts. Moke meanwhile, has played all major Dutch festivals, a.o. Lowlands and Pinkpop, as well as all major Dutch Venues. This year they will join Paul Weller on his European tour.

Phil Tilli has gratefullly accepted the honour of the 2007 award according to sources within the Dutch Air Guitar Championships organisation.

Winner of the 2006 Dutch Air Guitar Life Time Achievement Award. Participated in numourous Air Guitar Qualification Rounds. The Hurricane has been playing Air Guitar since the early sixties and is specialised in playing air guitar to The Shadows and Hank Marvin. He came in 2nd at the first ever Air Guitar Championship in The Netherlands in 2003 and has participated ever since. In 2004 he came in 9th, in 2005 11th and in 2006 he stranded at the qualifying round at the Patronaat in Haarlem. In 2008 he finished 7th in his 6th consequetive final. (foto: c. Wim de Groot)

The first Air Guitar Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded in 2005 to 82 year old George ‘Trombone’ Vergouw, father of and source of inspiration to the organiser of the Dutch Championships. George played air instruments his whole life. In the 1930’s he started playing the air trombone, especially while interpreting music by the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Later on in his life, he progressed to air conducting the same orchestra, as well as performing a range of airinstruments on music by big bands like The Ramblers, Ted Weems, Jimmy Lunceford, Benny Goodman and many, many others. George Vergouw died May 2007. Up to his last moments, he was still interested in qualifying rounds of the Dutch Air Guitar Championships.
