Dutch Air Guitar Championships

Het lijkt alsof het er digitaal achter is geplakt, maar naar verluidt speelt hier toch echt een parlementarier luchtgitaar terwijl de minister van defensie zijn beleid staat te verdedigen. Een duidelijke verwijzing naar de stelling van onze organisatie dat wie een luchtgitaar vasthoudt, geen wapen meer kan hanteren…kortom, wij strijden voor de wereldvrede:

Kortom, de luchtgitaar inspireert, creeert, irriteert, redt…et cetera….

Het zijn niet de eersten, niet de besten maar het is wel erg leuk: SP-leider Emile Roemer en presentator Matthijs van Nieuwkerk spelen op samen een potje luchtgitaar op prime-time tv, tijdens de Top 2000. Acht jaar na het eerste NK luchtgitaar in 2003 lijkt de acceptatie van het nobele luchtgitaarspel groter dan ooit. Wat wil je ook, Roemer en Van Nieuwkerk lopen in de voetsporen van beroemde luchtgitaristen (op beeld vastgelegd) als Charlie Chaplin, Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Joe Cocker, Paul McCartney, Danny DeVito (Taxi; War of The Roses), Beyonce, Erykah Badu, Ilse de Lange, Marco Borsato, Natalia Imbruglia, Neil Young, Gilbert O’Sullivan, Ian Gillan (Deep Purple), Martin Brozius (RIP), Billy Idol, Tom Cruise en vele tientallen anderen…..wacht maar, als George Clooney eindelijk overstapt op air guitar, is het hek van de dam….Vooral populair bij vrouwen dus, dat luchtgitaar spelen, eindelijk mannen die het achterste van de tong durven te laten zien en humor hebben, om zichzelf kunnen lachen; geen sufferds met te groot ego dus, maar rockers in huis, wie wil dat niet…kortom, de Nederlandse Federatie van Luchtgitaristen (NFL), normaal centrum georienteerd, is er wel uit: Emile Roemer for President!

En ja hoor, daar komt weer een voormalig deelnemer aan het NK Luchtgitaar bovendrijven…in de enorme succesfilm (OK, smaken verschillen!) New Kids Turbo blijkt Tim Haars een van de hoofdrollen te vertolken, die van Gerrie van Boven….en wanneer deed deze Tim dan mee aan het NK Air Guitar? En niet onverdienstelijk, want hij werd uiteindelijk derde. En zo blijkt maar weer, er wordt gek tegen het kampioenschap aan gekeken door de goegemeente, maar talenten van het NK komen vroeg of laat altijd bovendrijven, zie ook het artikel hierover. En laten we niet vergeten dat het prestigieuze Festival Classique te Den Haag inmiddels jaarlijks geopend wordt met een NK Luchtdirigeren en de Cello Biennale in  Amsterdam kende zelfs het officiele dagonderdeel Air Cello. En wat een verrassing om te zien dat de Blaas of Glorie een deuntje speelt in de Top 2000 leader (en wellicht ook langs komt)….hierin speelt Poory Whiteless, verdienstelijk deelnemer in 2003 en 2008 aan de finale in Paradiso, terwijl zijn bands Blaze of Glory, Jimi Hendrix Tribute met Ross Currie en Blaas of Glorie in totaal liefs 6 maal het voorprogramma of als hoofdact tijdens de finale in Paradiso verzorgden.

Aan de steeds langer wordende lijst met bekende luchtgitaristen kan weer een aantal bekende namen worden toegevoegd. onze nationale country trots Ilse de Lange was enige tijd geleden headbangend en luchtgitaar spelend te zine in het glazen huis. Martin Brozius speelde ten tijde van Ren je Rot even kort op de luchtgitaar, de nieuwste clip van Neil Young biedt ook enig vermaak in deze en het leukste filmpje is te vinden op Youtube waarop Natalia Imbruglia met een pantomime speler haar bekendste lied zing: Torn: (more…)

This must be a high score for this website: within a timeframe of one week, I found evidence of three famous musicians playing air guitar. Billy Idol was strumming the virtual instrument on may occasions during his excellent performance at the Paradiso in Amsterdam (read the review). Friends told me Erykah Badu couldn’t leave the air guitar alone during her gig at the same venue last week. And finally, what can one say when one sees the cover of the new album of Gilbert O’Sullivan, the singer-songwriter who had several chart topping hits in the seventies and seems to be on his way back to the top, playing Glastonbury and The Carre in Amsterdam this year, after living in obsurity for many years.

Incredible footage! Bishop Paul S. Morton sings his soulful song ‘Let It Rain’, and during the guitar solo he shows what guitar music can do to a believing man: he starts playing air guitar! Although not everything can be seen, air guitaring specialist are convinced Bishop Morton is a true air guitar fan. . And even if you don’t like air guitar playing, you should really see this incredible footage of a man that has incresed his ministry from 600 to 20.000 believers, using music and belief as his only tools. Ian Gillan, singer of classic rock band Deep Purple, can often be seen air guitaring during one of the gigs of the still very active band. And quite rightly so, since the band offers multiple chances to perfect ones air technique, as Pelvis Fenderbender, world # 3 in 2005, tells us: ‘In my compulsory round during the World Championships I had to play the second solo of ‘Smoke on the Water’, from the ‘Made in Japan’ album. No sweat! Who doesn’t know this classic riffing by Ritchie Blackmore?’ Other favorites of air guitar players around the globe are ‘Woman from Tokyo’, ‘Fireball’ and ‘Black Night’ . By the way, most air keyboard players prefer ‘Child in Time’.
