Dutch Air Guitar Championships

Je zal maar net 22 zijn en dan al een life time achievement award krijgen. Bij het Nederlands Luchtgitaar Kampioenschap krijgt eenieder wat hij of zij verdient en dus ontving Stacey Rookhuizen tijdens de finale van het NK de 2008 Air Guitar Lifetime Achievement Award uit handen van juryvoorzitter Vergouw. ‘Stacey is enthousiast en gewaardeerd lid van de nationale jury sinds 2004, heeft vele jury’s zelf voorgezeten en organiseert i.s.m. de nationale organisatie nu zelf voorrondes door het hele land. Tevens heeft zij publicitair achter de schermen veel voor ons betekent’, aldus organisator Vergouw, ‘Zij is de toekomst van het NK Luchtgitaar. Daarin maakt leeftijd, achtergrond, kleur, gezindheid of wat dan ook niets uit.’ Stacey toonde zich ontroerd, dankbaar en verguld met de trofee.

After an intense virtual battle, John Sniffler from Utrecht won the sixth Dutch Air Guitar title. Currently preparing himself with his personal coach and trainer in secret foreign training camps, John Sniffler will be representing the Netherlands at the 13th Air Guitar World Championships, that will be held on Friday 22nd of August in Oulu, Finland. National team manager Vergouw will join Sniffler to Oulu in his quest for global recognition. Sniffler played a wonderful free round, in which he performed a mix of Gypsy music by the Rosenberg trio. He defended his 1st place in the compulsory round, which was the first minute of Brainstorm by The Arctic Monkeys. Second place was for Pedro Elastico (last years # 4), third place for Queen Bitch Christina (Amsterdam). Last years champ The T came in at 5th place, while long lasting champs like Tremelo Theun (champ in 2005; now # 4) and the Hurricane (7th) showed air guitar of the highest quality. This must be a high score for this website: within a timeframe of one week, I found evidence of three famous musicians playing air guitar. Billy Idol was strumming the virtual instrument on may occasions during his excellent performance at the Paradiso in Amsterdam (read the review). Friends told me Erykah Badu couldn’t leave the air guitar alone during her gig at the same venue last week. And finally, what can one say when one sees the cover of the new album of Gilbert O’Sullivan, the singer-songwriter who had several chart topping hits in the seventies and seems to be on his way back to the top, playing Glastonbury and The Carre in Amsterdam this year, after living in obsurity for many years.

De ook dit jaar weer hoog geëindigde oud-Nederlands kampioen (2005) luchtgitaar spelen Tremelo Theun uit Hengelo is en blijft maar druk met optredens. Op 12 juli stond hij nog op Dance Valley, eind juli speelt onze voormalig nummer 1, 2, 3 en 4 van de Nederlandse kampioenschappen (periode 2005-2008) alweer in Italië op een podium in zee. En er zijn geruchten dat Tremelo Theun actief zal zijn in het kader van 50 jaar Nederlandse popmuziek! Hierover later meer. Give them Air, Theun! (foto: c. Wim de Groot)

Ook U kunt Theun en andere top-luchtgitaristen boeken voor optredens. De bekendste air-guitar spelers van Nederland zijn aangesloten bij luchtgitaar.nl en hebben opgetreden voor soms tienduizenden mensen tegelijkertijd, in landen als Finland, Duitsland, Engeland, Japan, Zuid-Korea en Frankrijk (Idols, eat you heart out!). Sinds hun debuut in 1979 staan de Amerikaanse B-52’s (genoemd naar de kapsels van de dames uit de beginperiode) bekend om hun feestmuziek. Voor een diepe boodschap moet je niet bij deze band zijn, die in Nederland verrassend genoeg hun grootste hit hadden met een bewerking van de Flintstones tune voor de gelijknamige film (overigens onder de naam BC-52’s). Een Amerikaanse top 10 hit als Love Shack haalde hier ten lande net de top 20 terwijl ook moderne klassiekers als Rock Lobster en Good Stuff werden hier geen tophits. Toch was Paradiso al weken uitverkocht; de band staat niet voor niets bekend als de ultieme feestband. (more…)
